Toulmin Method

The Toulmin method allows you to analyze the logic of any argument, also useful in examining the logic of your own argument. In simple words, this method breaks down arguments into six different components including claims, grounds, warrant, qualifier, rebuttal, and backing. Warrant meaning critical thinking, and not just learning information, and a qualifier limits or clarifies the claim. "The Toulmin method of analysis helps critical readers detect other weaknesses in an argument" (Green 285). This is important in order to have a strong background and evidence supporting your argument, if you catch where someone else's argument is weak it can help to support your own. A good example of how this method has been used online is a paper written from the University of Windsor about using the Toulmin argument to develop an online dispute. This paper clearly states and labels the different components being used from the method. Here is a link to the example essay. Using Toulmin Argument to develop an Online Dispute Resolution Environment. The Toulmin method is a framework used to understand and create logical and effective arguments in writing or speaking.
